Understanding The Causes Of Gynocomastia
As you probably know, gynocomastia is the clinical name for the condition colloquially known as man boobs or man tits but what you may not know is that the causes of gynocomastia can be many and varied. The condition takes the form of swollen tissue beneath the nipple and areola. The areola is the circle of dark skin immediately around the nipple. The swollen area can sometimes be painful, sore or tender.
So What Causes It?
The cause of gynocomastia is related to the presence of the female hormone estrogen in the blood stream of the male. It is quite normal for men to have a small amount of estrogen in the body (just as it’s quite normal for women to have some testosterone) but those who suffer from man boobs either have an excess of estrogen or the breast cells are rather more than usually sensitive to it.
In young girls, at puberty, the increase in estrogen in their blood stream begins to develop breast tissue and, as the girl matures, the level of estrogen increases and breasts eventually develop. In boys and men, on the other hand, the levels of estrogen seldom get high enough to develop full breasts but a small amount will be sufficient to cause the swelling I’ve referred to.
Gynocomastia can also be associated with other, more serious medical conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver, renal (kidney) failure or, hyperthyroidism, that is enlargement of the thyroid gland. It can also be connected with chronic pulmonary disease and the use of hormones such as androgens for body building.
Gynocomastia and Drugs
Medical drugs can also be implicated. Drugs such as cimetidine (marketed as Tagamet, for the treatment of heartburn and peptic ulcers) and spironolactone, used to treat heart failure can both cause a swelling of the breast tissue through methods which are not fully understood. Interestingly the use of marihuana can be one of the causes of gynocomastia.
Being Overweight
Obviously being overweight will lead to the deposition of fat on the chest (and everywhere else) which will enhance the effect of your gynocomastia.
